In 2016 the value of the grocery retail market in Poland rose by 3.8%. This means that its growth rate definitely accelerated after several years of slower expansion. The acceleration has been driven, on the one hand, by the return of food price inflation towards the end of 2016 and, on the other hand, by an increase in consumption boosted by low unemployment, rising wages and the introduction of the Rodzina 500+ scheme.

We expect that in the coming years the market growth rate will remain at the present relatively high level. The inflation will continue to influence the market value which, however, will also be bolstered by changes in the consumers’ buying habits, such as their turn to healthy food, the increased popularity of buying non-food articles at grocery stores and the greater significance of factors such as product quality and innovativeness. The fastest growing distribution channels will be discount stores, very popular among Poles, as well as attractively located convenience stores.
